Divi 5 Public Alpha It's been out recently. This means that everyone, even you, can test this new version. I also migrated my Divi tips site on this new version... And « spoiler alert »Everything went well! In this article, I show you how I migrated from Divi 4 to Divi 5 and how you can do the same...

1 – What is a « Public Alpha »

In the Web world, we often talk about « Beta version »In general, it is these versions that come into the hands of users. Concerning Divi 5, the reconstruction site was so large that there were 4 phases:

  • Alpha developer
  • Beta developer
  • Public Alpha
  • Public Beta

So we're in the third phase. The two previous ones were too long to my taste... But time has to be given.

Having been part of the Dev Beta phase, I can assure you that they are not unemployed. I was able to see a lot of messages in the dedicated Discord channel. Besides, in this channel, I saw that many developers of third party modules (Divi Grid, DiviFlash, Divi Supreme Pro, etc.) were part of it and I find it reassuring, it means that they also work so that their modules become compatible with Divi 5...

To return to the question « what is a Public Alpha »Well, it's just a trial version of a software. You can now test Divi 5 while keeping in mind that it will not be a final version.

This larger-scale testing phase allows you to discover the bugs that developers would not have detected in order to correct them.

2 - How to test Divi 5 Alpha?

To test Divi 5 in Alpha version, it's very simple, just go on this page dedicated, but know that you will have to connect to your customer account via this link to access the download.

Also, if you are not yet a customer, know that you can test directly online by following this link. This opens a page where the Divi Builder is enabled by default and allows you to play a little with this new interface.

Attention!!! If you want to test Divi 5 on your own site, make a local copy using a local server such as Local WP or MAMP. Please do not install Divi 5 on a production site (on your real online site). This is recommended by Elegant Themes.

3 – Divi 5 Alpha = imperfect version

Indeed, it must be borne in mind that an Alpha version of a software is necessarily imperfect. There may be bugs, it may lack features, etc. Therefore, no hasty conclusions can be drawn at this stage.

In its articleElegant Themes insists on 5 points to keep in mind:

  1. Divi 5 Alpha is an unfinished version that can present bugs. Its goal is to solve problems to improve the final version.
  2. If you notice that features are missing, it is not that they have been deleted, it is that they have not yet been added.
  3. You do not need to wait for third party modules from the Divi Marketplace be ready to test Divi 5. Thanks to the backward compatibility mode, you can test without problems, even if they are not yet compatible.
  4. The team of developers plans to improve several things before the final version. There are known bugs that need to be fixed, performance improvements, and the user interface needs further refinement.
  5. For all previous reasons, you should not use this Alpha version on your production sites.

4 - Migration from Divi 4 to Divi 5: demo in video

I thought a little video would be more relevant than a long article! So, I tested the migration from Divi 4 to Divi 5 on my blog Tips Divi, previously copied in local.

You will see in this video that I didn't do any pre-tests (the phlegm of copying multiple sites locally) 🤣) and you will see that I was surprised by the fluidity and simplicity of this migration 👇 .

However, I would like to point out that I never use third party plugins for Divi. Although I often do tests of these plugins, here on this blog, you should know that I am a « purist ». All my sites are created with Divi 100%. This way of using Divi facilitated the migration from Divi 4 to Divi 5 since everything is native. You may have noticed that all the lights were green on my video test.

Another very important thing, which certainly facilitated migration: my previous one Redesign of Divi Tips.

Indeed, I recently prepared the ground with my redesign, as the old version of Divi Tips used a theme child in which I had encoded tons of things 😫. During this redesign, I removed this child theme to use all the native features of Divi, which had evolved in the meantime. I guess that has helped the right conversion. I guess on a site with custom code, it could have been much more complex... I'm sure of it!

5 - In conclusion: test Divi 5 Alpha Public!

You must have noticed in my video, I'm like a kid on Christmas morning who's gonna get the presents under the tree. 😍. And I'm excited anyway... Then I say ENFIN! I'm delighted to see this new Divi 5.

It remains to be seen how long this test phase will last. And I guess it's just about us: just test and pull up bugs to be treated and fixed. A new corrective version will be released every two weeks.
